I love that Batmite one CCP, ill try and do one too but my cartoony style ain’t too good.

This was one of my first attempt in using a brush and ink, and kind of I guess, my first finished piece and I still really like it. This was under the title ‘Spawn vs. Scarecrow’.

Spawn looks awesome

Scarecrow looks a bit odd though… still completely awesome style. I’m so jealous of people who can make so good looking stuff.

Here at the Disciples of Bork we’re all equals…

And I’m the most equal of all.

The oddness of the scarecrow is the proportions. The hand is way too small, which gives him a childish look. Also, the perspective on the gun is wack. I like the brush and line work in this piece, and see a distinct improvement already from the stuff posted on the last page. I much prefer the real look of a brush to the phoney photoshop airbrush work.

I’m gonna give a very general piece of advice, which was also given to me many many times while studying art: learn to draw by looking at the world, not other artists. I learned to draw by immitating comic artists I liked, and it stunted my abilities severely for a very long time. Once you break from looking at drawings and learn how things really look, then you’ll really own your style.

Ged, my fiancee wants me to say that your Spawn picture is "an amazing piece of artwork".

Ged has mad technique. But, like all artists, he should be drawing what I tell him to draw, not super heros or flowers or whatever.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments and support, I really appreciate it.
Yellow, you are very right about looking at the world to learn instead of comics, the majority of my work in school is observational. Unfortunately I have to learn the anatomy from anatomist books (George Birdgeman, Andrew Loomis), which is good to some extent. I’ve tried to join Life Drawing classes in and outside of school but they always said I was too young, so I have to wait till the end of this school year.

I did the spawn piece a while ago and I agree with all the points you made, I remember having trouble with that hand and gun, I still do, I find it hard to draw hands and guns without an reference. There are also other things I don’t like about the Scarecrow, such as his jacket, don’t really know why I drew it that way or what I was going for and I also had an ink wash accident at the bottom left of the drawing, so now I have all my ink stuck to the table. Thanks a lot for the crits Yellow, most detailed response I’ve had online and I really do learn from it.

Just thought I might add another picture. This is a quick sketch of ‘Joker on Sterioids’.

Thanks a lot Zack, I picked up a MSG Art Book from ebay, I kinda mimicked his style so that’s why it probably looks familiar. Seems like the second image isn’t showing… anyone eles having problems?
