Just wondering - Anyone here actually get out and do any exercise/sport/martial arts etc?

I work out most days… do strength-training exercises with and with-out weights, and twice a week I do a martial art called Krav Maga - which is a really REALLY brutal-as-fuck self defense method, developed originally for the Israeli Defense Force.

Who needs a gf when you can choke someone into a coma and rip thier ears off! (yes, it is possible to rip someone’s ears off - and I know how too, so be warned!)

what about you guys?

I don’t do any specific exercise just because I want to. But I cycle to college every day up a huge hill at about 10 degree incline. Takes about 25 minutes to get there and it gives me good aerobic exercise.

For my work as a cleaner I have to clean a huge sports hall. Sweep it and then mop it. It’s a pretty huge area and I’m usually pretty tired after that. And if I finish early I use the weights or jump on a cycling machine for 10 minutes.

I guess that’s my exercise intake. So with my work taking 2 hours, and cycling taking 50 minutes, I’m doing something like 2 hours 30 minutes actual exertion each day.

I’ve never actually felt the need to learn how to defend myself in a fight ie learn a martial art. Usually the people I meet that might want to punch me ignore me because I’m so pissed…

I usually practice taido (an acrobatic martial art) 3 times a week, but since I broke a menisci in my left knee at the start of this semester I’ve had to reduce it to be assistant instructor 2 times a week. So right now most of my exercise comes from taking the bike to and from work (about 10km) every day. I also do soem situps and pushup at home to keep in shape, as well as some exercises to keep my broken knee in action until surgery..

Overall I’ve pulled down quite a lot on the exercise part. 4 years ago I used to play volleyboll and beach volley up to 8 times a week, before I felt my body couldn’t take it anymore. After that I cut down ont the volleyboll and started with martial arts to get something that actually helped me build up more than just my right arm (did do quite a lot smashing, so it was my right shoulder that made me stop… it gave me serious warnings about giving up completely).

I work out on a treadmill (guineaPigX) and lift weights when time permits.  Since BabyX arrived, that time is running pretty thin.

I try to keep active. I bike to and from school everyday which takes about an hour in total. I also do some basic exercises at home to keep my beergut at a minimum and I have a 5 litre keg of beer I use as a weight, so my arms aren’t completely skinny anymore.

I’m not all that big on physical activity and would rather be without to be honest.

I do walk alot in town even in this cold winter (on nice days, of course). My workplace has an incentive they offer in cooperation with the local fitness center just a block down the street. They take $5 out of my check every week and that pays for a pass I get access to use most of the regular equipment at the fitness center. It’s a pretty sweet deal.

I’ve tried to workout once a week since graduating high school. I took a running class in college. Easiest 3 credits ever, all you did was change out and walk/run around campus for an hour 3 times/week. On rainy days, we just did some indoor activity.

I’m feeling a bit tired now, think I’ll have a nap..

I guess I should change my regime, which is sitting in front of the comp at work, followed by sitting in the car, then sitting in front of the TV or comp at home, then sleeping….

I did some pushups about 8 years ago, so I guess the improvement has probably worn off by now.

Im not a big fan of this ‘running’ thing. But ive wrestled for 5 years in junior high and highschool (2nd best in the country for Greco-Roman wrestling :D). I was thinking of joining the varsity wrestling team, but the time commitment was i think 6 days a week for 2 hours a practice. I just couldnt do that. So i started taking Judo, which is twice a week for 2 hours. Im in my 4th year of judo now, fun stuff. Ive also looked at a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (think Royce Gracie and stuff) club thats about 10 mins from my house.

Right now I havent been able to do much. I have to do really well on my current round of finals, so all of my time has been taken up by studying. Going to practice tonight though and im going to try out this choke on a few people: Antonio Nogueria’s Anaconda Choke

I forgot calling the cops and hitting the deck when things get out of hand in the neighborhood.

That gets the heartrate up.

I used to box, but a couple lectures about my high risk for detached retinas retired me fairly quickly.  However, nothing is more satisfying than annihilating a heavy bag for ten 3 minute rounds.

I don’t tend to excercise as much as I did a few years ago. I used to fence a fair bit, until my knees got beat up. Nowdays I mostly walk as excercise.

Sometimes as I walk I’ll pick up someone with one hand and sling them over my shoulder, or sometimes pass them from hand to hand. This helps with my upper body strength. Oh, and it helps if said person is a four-month old. And it helps even more if I’m the father of said four-month old.

Eventually as I get skilled at this, I expect the difficulty rating to go up as said person becomes more of a moving target… :D

Cripes, I forgot the carrying of babies as a form of exercise.

When they get some good size, the diaper tantrum domination control move is a great upper-body maintenance exercise.

Generally I just walk this tired old city during my lunch break or between classes when I’m in school.  I tend to walk down to the tourist gold district down on Michigan avenue, make fun of shoppers, piss in the Chicago River, and try to jump in front of news reports with a sign that says “Fuck Bush!”

I’m an avid archer and also practice swordfighting when time permits (how I wish we had some swordfighting instructors of any type around here). I don’t have a driver’s license, so I walk a lot too.

I row for 2 hours 4 times a week.  We run about a mile, use the rowing machines for about 10 minutes (the equivalent of rowing about 2.5km), then we actually get on the water.  Our average row is about 5-7km which takes about an hour, including loading and unloading boats.  I’ve done this since August of last year.

[quote author=“Whaleman”]I broke a menisci.

Technically, its a meniscus—either lateral or medial. Menisci is plueral, implying both.

Anyway, as far as excercising goes…. Summer of ‘03 my Jeep died on me (thrown rod), and so for a couple months I had only my bike as transportation. Those were the best days of my life. I’d be out riding at 4:00AM as happy as could be. I felt great, so long as I got in some cycling every day, and my skin developed this damn sexy glow. I had the energy of a god.

This year I somehow ended up with a desk job at the local hospital. I get up, throw on some designer clothes, drive to work, and sit my ass down. 4:30 rolls around and I drive back home and plop my ass down in my computer chair where I am right now because its dark and wet outside.

Anyhow, something’s gotta change.

My excercise whims come and go. For a long time I was running like a mad man as I lost 15 pounds I put on my frosh year and its stayed off. The biggest thing for me when excercising is whether I have the energy. My insomnia will drain me, rendering me almost incacipated. Motivation doesn’t come in a bottle as I down my perscription sleep meds hoping the next day I have energy. But I’ve been excercising again. I like to run. Its just when I’m not too damn tired to.

Anyhow I’m not exactly in shape but I’m not completely out of shape either. I’m roughly 17% fat which means I could use some firming up but I think I look pretty sexy in my music video. Right now excercise is more in vain and just feed my quasi-health nut tendancies.

I took a Tennis class this summer and that was fun, granted I’m terrible at Tennis. I kinda enjoyed playing like I was Micheal Chang and chasing down balls I had no chance of getting.
