I think this is a great idea for apple. Definitely will open up a new market for them. Assuming the rumor comes to reality of course.

A 1.25 G4 at $499 is decent for anyone, not just windows crossovers. I’d consider it depending on the HD size and if the rumor turns to reality. Of course, having it be Superdrive ready would be a nice [but unrealistic] bonus too.

This could easily double their market share (like other places say). But, as we are looking so into this as mac columnists, and giving it so much press, that if it isn’t what we want (pricewise, think $100 ipod -> ipod mini), or, if they don’t do it at all, could hurt apple a lot. If macworld comes and goes without this announcement, i can see the shares dropping. Fuck the media.

If this turns out to be true it would be really interesting to see how it does on the market. Is Apple the next Dell?

Sounds good. I hope this is a successful venture for Apple and for anyone interested in Mac but is simply looking for a cheap computer for internet, word processing, virus/spyware-free, etc.

Although a sub-$500 Mac is good, I still say they’re going a bit skimpy on the RAM most of all. Apple could easily bump the RAM to 512MB without changing the price by using a slighty lower cost memory brand. And the 1.25GHz G4 could be a 1.4GHz….

In any case though, I just pray no one is going to buy this thing and expect to play high-performance games on it, only to be disappointed and later bitch about it on IMG forums. Sadly, there’s always at least one…  rolleyes

Mneah, they could be heading that way.  Apple would have to throw in a cheap CRT in order to compare to Dell at that price range.

I bet people would feel a bit safer buying a new comp for the same price as what they may find one for on ebay. Course, that may just be me and my innate sense of paranoia and an inherent mistrust of people.

I dont think i would get a comp off of ebay. software sure, but i dont think i would buy any largescale hardware. small things.. maybe. depends.

You’d be hard pressed to find anything on ebay with the specs of this new box anywhere near $500. At least in the UK, 1.25GHz G4 towers can go for as much as £900-1000 with specs similar to the rumoured box.

I am not seeing a lot of CRTs for sale now, maybe they will do a cheap LCD to go with it…

I don’t know if anyone in here is looking for one of these to come out, that needs a cheap CRT monitor, the Mitsubishi (now NEC) DiamondPoint SB70 is great. I use one with my G5.
