I would like everyone to know, that I just saw Transformers, and I am very glad I didn’t pay a dime to watch it. I’ll preface to say, I just don’t like action movies much at all.
I’d give about a C, although it was funny, the best line was when Ironhide suggests the humans are violent and Prime retorts “Were we so different?” . Now I didn’t expect Transformers to really tantalize me intellectually but the dialogue and plot was pretty thin, generally trying service the viewer until shit started exploding again. It felt like I was watching Independence day all over again. The action was fairly dull, in the same way Diehard 4 was, with plenty of super shaky cameras, and far too much happening to really process all the bended reality. The state of suspended disbelief is far too absurdly high.
Giant Talking robots? Okay cool. Talking robots that transform? Still Cool. Talking robots that transform and fight? Still on board. Giant talking robots that transform, fight and perform Matrix slow mo rocket dodges over exploding cars and buildings? Stupid. I’ll admit, I think the modernization the robot’s aesthetics offended me, but you really lose a sense of scale and size as the robots are so incredibly agile and nimble in battle, despite wrecking lawns and patios. Also rather bland was the robots almost had no personality. Ptime was classically noble but his overly simplistic rhetoric killed any aged wisdom and universal truths he was dispensing. Megatron pretty much was like, “Bitch, I’m Megatron, I smash shit”. Seriously, while the main character was fine as Transformers always followed a tight interaction with a human boy to service the fantasies of 7 year old boys, I just honestly didn’t give a shit about too hot for US intelligence girl or sergeant-I-just-want-to-hold-my-baby. I wanted to see more of the great robot history and more explaining the cube.
Oh well. Nothing like bastardizing memories from my childhood even if Transformers functioned as a Hasbro’s 24 minute vehicle to hawk some cool robot toys.
