So now that the thread name is made of fail, much like the HDDVD format itself, is this thread on a deathwatch too?

Unlike the formats in the format war, we’re Future Proofâ„¢ by Editing®. Nobody is to know about the errors of our past!

Besides, we still have 2 pages worth of SONY spite to go, easy.

Oh HD-DVD how we barely knew thee.

Toshiba hasn’t officially confirmed it, but it’d be the smart thing to do. I figured this wear still had at least 6 months left in it, if not a year or longer. Hopefully this will lead to cheaper Blu-Ray players, and explosion in available content, and better players after Toshiba joins the Blu-Ray ranks.

I have to say, this honestly is the first time I can name a game console has won a format war, as previous attempts standardize UMD, Mem Stick, Windows Media etc have had little impact on the market.

Sony gambled big with the PS3, EA recently announced that they expect more Playstation 3s to be sold than 360s this year, and I imagine its Blu-Ray capabilities are no small part. What initially was the biggest flaw of the PS3 (its cost of the blu-ray) might be its savior.

http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/18/numbers-tabulated-wii-predicted-to-overtake-xbox-360-in-2008/

However, that said, the PS3 still has yet to prove its any better than a 360.  I imagine a good portion of the PS3 sales will be Blu-Ray adopters, going for the best cheap player. However I don’t see this trend maintaining once there are quality 2.0 Players that are sub $300. I still don’t understand the Wii. Does anyone play their Wiis often after their initial Wii craze? I went through that, then I realized the thing is a piece of shit.

Doesn’t it prove that its any better by not self destructing when you breathe on it?

I think the successor to Wii probably will be a lot better. Right now the Wii is sorta this public tech demo without much meaningful content. It doesn’t take a genius to see that it has a lot of potential but capitalizing on it is much harder than one would expect, hence most games are better played without the wiimote, henceforth why I dislike it.

I heard about that tech demo, I’ve debated buying a wii point to use with my MacBook, just for entertainment. I can imagine with the Wiimotes you could put together a pretty cool art project or presentation.

Right now the Wii is this underpowered non-HD bastard, and with the processing power, it can’t do the advanced physics that’d make for some great wiititles.

“A lot of people call it a Sony standard but by our estimates Sony doesn’t even have 30 percent of the IP,” Doherty said. The top four intellectual property holders are likely Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Warner.”

Makes more sense with Pioneer behind it, as they were instrumental in various formats like the various DVD varients (DVD-Rom, DVD-R etc) and CDs. I found it interesting that industry people figured it’d be easier to set up HD-DVD piracy duplications shops, when honestly, main meat and potatoes has been for ages online distribution. Neither format proved very secure with HD-DVD being broken nearly instantaneously and Blu-Ray not long after. I suppose over the next few years, bandwidth infrastructure just isn’t wide enough for nearly the mass scale of non-HD piracy, but it’ll catch up.
