While we’ve done quite a share of talking about big game releases, we haven’t touched the downloadable content of most consoles very much. After spending some time on Live Arcade I’ve ended up with a few titles that I’ve bought or plan to buy that would like to recommend people to check out. Since I start this out I’ll mention even the extremely obvious ones. People should keep on filling in their favourites after hand ![]()
Worms: Team 17 didn’t settle for a straight port of any of their previous 2D wormtastic ballistic games. Instead this one is a pretty much new game, if extremely familiar. Any fan of the series should own it already. There’s some quirks like an über-slow and harder than ever to use homing missiles, but it’s still good fun for the money.
Rez HD: This one I haven’t bought yet, but the demo has me hypnotized. It’s hard to define the game… but music based shooter comes somewhat near the truth. There’s no way to put words on it, so try it out instead.
Lumines: Tetris spinoffs have come in many shapes and forms, but few as special as Lumines. I don’t know how the Arcade version compares to the original PSP game, but the weird square-twisting and line timing game is a true gem for anybody into puzzle games. It is unlike most puzzle games and requires a whole new thinking pattern.
Hexic: This game comes on the 360 HD. If you haven’t played it yet you should. It’s pretty much a Bejeweled with hexagonal bricks with some twists to it. Not the most original puzzle game out there, but it’s different enough to take a few hours of your time.
GripShifht: Probably the worst driving simulator in a long time… but as a car-puzzle game with a razing and deathmatch mode and far out physics it’s really fun. Car handling is awesomely unreal, with mid-air control and all and the level design makes the best possible use of this… turning the challenges tracks into individual puzzles. Really a fun game if you don’t want realistic car control.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix: Weird Puzzle game that is all about multiplayer. Me and my brother spent a large chunk of an evening battling each other in this game. It’s a highly dynamic puzzle challenge where you create combos to toss nasty pieces at your opponent… that in its turn can help him create even worse combos your way if you’re unlucky. As a single player game it could probably become tedious quick.
Uno: If the US is like Sweden, just saying Uno is enough. It’s the card game, on your console. And it’s well done. Should be all you need to know.
Puzzle Quest: CHallenge of the Warlords: As silly as it might sound, this is a game that mixes Bejeweled with RPG rules and story. It’s a really unique experience and it has already stolen hours of my time. I’m getting it for DS too as soon as I can get a hold of it…. it really, really rocks. For some people soft to puzzle and RPG games I would almost advice against trying it out. It’s addictive. Penny Arcade did some comics about this game too if you feel you recognize it.
