I thought GTA III was fucking boring. I can only go on a killing spree so many times, and all the missions were bland and repetitive.
GTAIV better have more than 7 kinds of car and a garbage truck.
I’ve not been a big GTA fan either. I’ve watched friends play through the last few GTA titles. Not that repetition is a bad thing, I don’t mind some forms of repetition as long as whatever it is makes me feel like I’m accomplishing something toward some ultimate goal and/or whatever I’m repeating is pretty easy.
Say, if many of you people have GTA IV, post some review thoughts or something. I’ve not heard anything say much in detail about this thing which supposedly got lots of 10s on review sites.

Yup.. supposedly it’s gotten so many tens that it has pushed Ocarina of Time down to 3rd best game ever on GameRankings for the moment. The PS3 version gets the #1 spot (99.379%) with the 360 version 0.775% behind (1% above OoT). I still have a hard time believing that… but I guess I’ll be proven wrong once I get it after the summer.

Granted I haven’t played GTA4, but I have a strong feeling that money changed hands in regards to some of those reviews.

You should keep digging into that, it could become the “faked lunar landings” of video games.

Like anyone cares, I wound up getting the PS3 version instead. My friend James bought the 360 version. I prefer the ps3 version based on the controller alone. The 360 has that weird unintentional drift that happens every once in a while that bugs the hell out of me. Happens in Bioshock too. I didn’t see any differences graphical/performance wise, so that wasn’t a biggie. I don’t have a gold live membership. The PSNetwork runs just fine with the game. No custom radio station that mooches off of my mp3s, and the radio stations get old fast.
I’ll agree it’s definitely not a 10. A easy 9.5, but not a 10.
Btw, there are some FREAKS that come out to Gamestop at midnight releases. Talk about guys with 5-o’clock shadows, slicked back hair, pleather body-length coats wielding home-made FFVII replica weapons in pseudo-choreographed fight scenes, this mini mall was crawling with them.
I mentioned this in another thread, but here goes:
I have the 360 version of the game. It’s great.
But it’s nowhere near a perfect 10.
The story and characters (that gets a lot of praise) are decent (but not oligarchtastic - stated in reviews).
Control is shitloads better than before (but still somewhat retarded every now and then).
The missions are a varied bunch. Some are good, most are the same as before (pick up something/someone, drive across (the whole fucking) town, execute some motherfucker(s), loose wanted level). There is too little variation.
And you STILL HAVE TO DRIVE ALL ACROSS FUCKING TOWN AGAIN (or get a cab) before getting to mission start when you choose to retry a failed mission. WTF??? Why not start ten steps away from the mission trigger? That way, if I want to stock up on guns and protection before starting mission - no problems.
All this bitching is ‘cause it gets 10 everywhere. It’s a 9, and should get nines.

I highly suspect money changed hands for some of those scores
I’d be surprised if money explicitly changed hands in a “we’ll give you $X for a 10”. I think that it’s probably a case of the game being very good at first blush, and it being reviewed in a very controlled environment. In hotels, no doubt paid for by Take 2, with company handlers and PR folks involved in facilitating the process. I don’t think that reviewers are any more immune to pre-release exuberance then fans, and getting to be first on such a huge release must also color opinions.
