Uh, yeah, maybe I don’t feel the need to discuss heavy issues that movies bring about. Personally the idea of Batman makes me reflect on the concepts of the material man and whether or not the physical person is indeed the characteristic that determines who they are, whether they’re alive or dead, and so on, or whether it’s more of the immaterial idea/spirit behind the person that plays those roles. I’m just content thinking about it myself.

Do you talk to people after you read books?

Personally, I watch movies to be entertained, not for some groundbreaking existential revelation. Just sayin’.

Personally, just watching a movie entertains me and also provides me with thinking material, but both equally passively. I think, but I don’t think. It just happens. I’m probably the least critical when it comes to movies. I’ll watch Step Up and be entertained, and then watch The Thin Blue Line and be entertained. One requires a little more attentiveness than the other, sure, but I think I’d watch any move I’ve ever seen again if it was just playing. Except maybe the Star Wars Holiday Special. That had to be the greatest test of my endurance ever. It was painful. I had to take a break half way through.

I know… I was sitting in the theater wondering if they were trying to say that Ashcroft and Bush are really just like Batman, because that’s certainly the impression I got from it.

I hope to God that the republicans don’t get elected again, I’m not sure I can go through another 4 years of ‘[Republican president’s name] IS [The Devil/Hitler]. BURN HIM, BUUUUUUUURN HIM’ whenever people talk about popular culture.

I must agree with Ross about Wall-e, just so that on Friday and it was a brilliant film, that didn’t even need lots of dialog to be awesome.

Dark Knight is a Masterpiece. nuff said.

to Yellow #5:
Joker’s talk to Dent was to get him to go off the deep end, not an actual admission that he has no master plans. Everything the joker did had a reason to it.
My favorite part of the movie:
The return of commissioner Gordan. When he died I figured “crap they must not have been able to get him for the next movie and wanted to kill him off”. His return was completely bad ass.
Then it will just be ‘[some American/French media channel/religious fanatic group] IS [The Devil’s Work/SS]. BURN THEM, BUUUUUUUURN THEM’ instead. So much more enjoyable. wink

I don’t think that’s the case, I mean Batman was doing that kind of thing long before Bush was even president. Batman just represents a basic fact of humanity, we don’t mind seeing bad guys get the snot beet out of them.

Was he? Invading people’s privacy on a city wide level specifically via their phone? I don’t think you can say it’s unrelated to our actual political environment, particularly considering that there was even a voice of dissent that mirrored the opposition. While Batman has never represented due process or civil liberties, I thought it was a bit over the top to actually have his actions mirror those of the current administration in such a blatant manner.

Pff, the government has known all of us and our phone calls and letters since they day the government was invented. That was like, thousands of years ago too.

While Batman appeases flashy booms, it isn’t devoid of substance, otherwise it’d been received lukewarm like Spiderman 3 or X-men 3, and as much as I hate the term, “post-9/11” to describe a film, very much represents an underlying fear that is re-asserted throughout the film. It seems rather interesting that they’d chose a mechanism that directly involves wiretapping since the script could have called for so many other random fantastical gadgets that could assist the caped crusader, as after all this is just an excuse to seeing people get punched in the mouth right?

Then it goes the extra mile with the purporting Batman’s character as taking the fall knowing he inevitably got the end result desired. Then there’s other issues like torture vs no torture (Batman vs Dent) where Batman is
justified beating Joker a little in custody to give the illusion of an unsafe environment BUT not too much (only good torture is allowed like Water Boarding), the grainy forced confession videos filmed in non-desrcript areas and the forced read statement by the security guard, the suicide bomber and so forth.
Hell the
suicide bomber was lied to by the Joker
, duped into the situation. I’d argue that this was very much a pity cry for those suckered into
ending their own life and how they’re tricked into carrying out a suicide bombing
. The more I think about this, the more it becomes clear. Even Batman goes across
international boundaries to apprehend the man guilty of heading up the finances for the crime group.
Fuck international law and due process, this is America!

I’m standing by that this was clearly wasn’t coincidence. My regret is it took me a few days to really make the conclusion rather than the moment I walked out of the theater at 3 am.

Well, I finally went and saw Dark Knight last night. As promised, it was mucho entertaining, although this thread definitely somewhat colored the film for me.

Since I did see it so late in the game, there wasn’t much theater commotion. The only slight interruption we experienced were some kids behind us laughing when
Fox shot down that nosy executive with his blackmail line
.
